Dr. Marvin Sonne
Marvin grew up in Oak Park, Michigan where he graduated Oak Park High School (Phi Beta Kappa) in 1965. After graduation from Wayne State University with a B.S. in Biology (with distinction) in 1969, Marvin entered the University of Michigan Dental School. He married his high school sweetheart, Fran, in 1970 following his first year of dental school. Upon graduation in 1973 (elected to OKU National Honor Society--achieving life membership in 2009), Marvin served two years as a Lt. in the US Navy at Camp Pendleton, Cal where he gained invaluable experience reinforcing his desire to practice general dentistry once he completed his active duty.
Because of Marvin's desire to be close to his family, he returned to Michigan to begin his dental career. After 3 1/2 years at an office in Taylor, Michigan, Marvin opened his own office in 1979 with the help of Nancy Burr (then dental assistant and now Office Manager) in the city of Woodhaven, Michigan. Nancy and Dr. Sonne began their association together in 1977 and have been together for over 32 years as she now manages Sonne & Shapiro Dental. Marvin met Dr. Michael Shapiro in 1997 while Michael was a student at the University of Manitoba Dental School and in 2000 Michael and Marvin began their professional association together. In June 2004, they moved from Woodhaven to their state of the art facility in Trenton, Michigan.
Fran and Marvin have three children. Amy, 35, graduate d from Michigan State University in 1997 with a degree in Theater & Dance and then received a Master's Degree in Dance & Dance Education from NYU in 2002. Amy married Michael Brown in 2004 and in December 2006 gave birth to Ashleigh Ryann presenting Fran & Marvin their 1st grandchild. Amy, Mike, & Ashleigh reside in Merrick, NY (Long Island) where Mike is a Project Manager with Honeywell. Lisa, 32, is completing her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education at the University of South Carolina. She married Travis Wheeler in 2006 and in December 2008 gave birth to Cameron Drake presenting Fran & Marvin their 2nd grandchild. Lisa, Travis, & Cameron reside in Columbia, SC where Travis is an anti-trust attorney. Jeffrey, 28, is completing his education in Journalism at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. As well, Jeff writes a sports column for the Detroit Examiner (www.examiner.com) in his spare time. He resides in Farmington Hills with Fran & Marvin.
Paralleling Marvin's professional career is his devoted service to organized dentistry. Alpha Omega has consumed much of Marvin's time. He has served many offices locally and internationally from 1969 through today. This year Marvin is the Detroit Chapter Vice President and in 2010 will serve as the Detroit President (his 2nd term with the 1st in 1986).
Marvin is a member of the American Dental Association, Michigan Dental Association (6 years on the Scientific Committee and 6 years on the Annual Session Committee), Detroit District Dental Society (over 15 years on the Education Committee), Academy of General Dentistry, Chicago Dental Society, Russell W Bunting Periodontal Society, and The Francis B Vedder Crown & Bridge Prosthodontic Society in which Marvin has served many offices including President in 2008. Marvin taught clinical dentistry at the University of Detroit in 1979-80.
In addition, Marvin enjoys golf, bridge, working out, travel, and his current addicting hobby of fantasy baseball. He is an avid Michigan Wolverine sports fan and a major supporter of our professional Detroit sports teams with the Detroit Tigers being his favorite. In 1993, Marvin attended the Detroit Tigers Fantasy Baseball week in Lakeland, FL. Marvin has served on his Temple Israel Couple's Club and is a current member of the Temple's Usher Corps. He has been a member of the Woodhaven-Brownstown Rotary Club for over 15 years.
Marvin is as excited today about dentistry as he was when he graduated in 1973. The changes and advancements in the dental profession have significantly advanced the capability to provide people with not only excellent dental health but also to make a difference in their lives. People are living longer so the need for better dental health is more important than ever. The connection between dental health and overall health is one of the main research topics today and it is Marvin's belief that it is incumbent upon all in the dental profession to help people become as healthy as possible. That is the goal and mission of everyone at Sonne & Shapiro Dental as well as making sure that the close family feeling between everyone is maintained.

Dr. Michael Shapiro
Those who know Dr. Shapiro will tell you that he enjoys being on the cutting edge of dentistry! Some of his major clinical interests include Cosmetic Dentistry, Dental Photography, Laser Dentistry and Dental Implants. However, he truly enjoys the life changing benefits he provides patients through the treatment of headache and migraine sufferers with the NTI splint, as well as sleep apnea patients through the use of oral sleep apnea appliances. In recognition of his clinical accomplishments, Dr. Shapiro, along with his partner Dr. Sonne, was recognized in 2008 as one of Detroit's Top Dentist's in Hour Magazine.
Dr. Michael Shapiro was born and raised in the beautiful Canadian city of Calgary, Alberta, site of the 1988 Winter Olympics. In fact, he and his wife Dr. Lainie Shapiro (an orthodontist in Commerce, MI), were married there in 2000. They have two beautiful children, Jacob, who was born in 2005 and Maddie, born in 2007.
Dr. Shapiro attended the University of Manitoba School of Dentistry in Winnipeg, Canada, graduating with the University Gold Medal for highest standing in all four years of Dentistry, as well as numerous other awards in all disciplines of clinical dentistry.
After enduring four brutal Winnipeg winters (with temperatures regularly dropping to a bone chilling minus 30 degrees!) Dr. Shapiro sought warmer climates and moved south. . . . .to Michigan
Dr. Shapiro went on to attend the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program at the University of Michigan. There, he received advanced training in all aspects of restorative dentistry, with an emphasis on cosmetic dentistry.
Following the AEGD, Dr. Shapiro joined the practice of Dr. Marvin Sonne in 2000 which culminated in their building a new office together and a partnership in 2006.
After completing the AEGD program, Dr. Shapiro was also invited to join the clinical faculty at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He taught clinical dentistry to third and fourth year students, as well as introductory courses to first year dental students. Dr. Shapiro continues to run tutorial sessions for the students.
One of Dr. Shapiro's passions is the Special Olympics Special Smiles program. Over the past years, he has organized some of the most successful events in Special Smiles history, providing dental exams and athletic mouthguards to thousands of athletes. He has received several awards for his efforts with the Special Smiles program, including Detroit District Dental Society Citizen of the Year for 2007 and the Michigan Dental Association Public Service Award for 2008
Dr. Shapiro is an active member of the Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity. He served a two year term as president of the Detroit Alumni Chapter, as well as a variety of other position at the international level of the fraternity. Through these positions, he has been responsible for leadership seminars and continuing education courses for students and practicing dentists across North America. In addition, he helped Alpha Omega organize Project Chessed, through which free dental treatment is provided to patients in true financial need.
Dr. Shapiro's greatest joy is his family and loves to spend time with his wife, and children. In addition, Dr. Shapiro enjoys drawing, reading, computers, cooking and golfing. Coming from Canada, it's no surprise that Dr. Shapiro is a hockey fan. Although he generally cheers for the Detroit Red Wings, he remains at heart a hometown fan of the Calgary Flames. This makes for friendly office rivalries, especially at playoff time!
